Stephanotis

The name stephanotis florabunda may not be a familiar name among the flower lexicon, however, this delicate beauty has been a traditional favorite for countless brides over many years. It’s also known as the Madagascar Jasmine and the Hawaiian wedding flower.

Stephanotis gets its name from the Greek “stephan”, meaning crown, and “otis”, meaning ear. This perennial flower, native to the tropical island located off the eastern coast of Africa, blooms in multiple blossoms along a climbing woody vine. The leaves are a glossy deep green color and the flowers emit a sweet and light fragrance.

Small sized and pure white, stephanotis is distinguished by its five pointed starlike appearance. Its waxy petals lie fully open, as though they’ve been crisply ironed. Stephanotis can be crafted into a perfectly round globe to make symmetric bouquets and hanging pomanders. There’s nothing frilly about them, so they make exceptional boutonnieres. Alone, or placed alongside a small calla lily or fern, they are the perfect accent for formal attire. Stephanotis is just the right size to add in with other flowers to wrist corsages made for special guests, like mothers of the bride and groom.

Their shape and size are perfect for fashionable wedding party hair styles. Stephanotis, which also goes by the name Bridal Veil, can replace a traditional veil by tucking a few blooms into a sleek updo. In the center of the petals lies a tubular area into which a tiny pearl or rhinestone can be glued to add a sparkling touch.

Stephanotis signifies marital bliss, so it’s no wonder these gorgeous flowers have been implemented in a variety of ways into so many wedding themes. Traditional brides often opt for an all white stephanotis and gardenia bouquet for a classic and timeless look. For added color, they look appealing tucked in among peonies, lavender and sweet peas or among blue hydrangea and calla lilies. A particularly stunning arrangement can be fashioned from red roses dotted with stephanotis. The white against red packs a real punch.

As for festive decorations, segments of stephanotis vine can be draped across tables and chairs to create a garden party atmosphere at your Omak home. They make a nice bridal wreath. The deep green leaves add a nice touch. Tall vases of roses, white orchids and stephanotis make lovely centerpieces.

The classic stephanotis flower is available year round and makes a stellar choice for any special occasion.
