Gerbera Daisy

Gerbera daisies represent simplicity. They bring to mind sunlit meadows and sweet hand picked bouquets. Yet, there’s a surprising elegance to them which makes them perfect for centerpieces and celebrations.

These bright blooms are from more exotic climes. They first grew wild in South America, Asia and Africa, sometimes being called the Transvaal Daisy from being found in abundance in South Africa’s Transvaal region. The daisies were named for the famed German botanist, Traugott Gerber, friend of Carl Lineaus, the father of botany. They were first discovered and classified in 1884 by Scotsman Robert Jameson, in the Barberton region, probably during an area gold rush. Breeding programs began in England in 1890 which enhanced the flowers’ quality and color variation. The Gerbera daisy’s popularity soon traveled to growers in The Netherlands, which along with Columbia , is one of the chief distributors of the flowers today. Many love them because daisies symbolize innocence and purity as well as a symbol of beauty. Thanks to their vivid colors, the Gerbera daisy also represent cheerfulness.
